Fifty years ago, on May 16, 1975, Japanese climber Junko Tabei achieved what no woman had ever done before: she set foot on the summit of all summits, Mount Everest. The celebrations were limited to Asia, but her story is one of the most inspiring in sports. Adventurous dreams were not appropriate for a young Japanese woman, but Junko transcended Japanese social norms and cultural traditions. Sensitive to what she found in the mountains, she created the Himalayan Adventure Trust of Japan association in 1990.
