Synopsis

In 2018, viewers of Our Planet met orangutans Ellie and her young daughter, Eden. Now, six years later, The Secret Lives of Orangutans continues their story as nine-year-old Eden faces her greatest challenge: independence. Orangutan mothers share one of the strongest bonds in nature, with young taking nearly a decade to learn survival skills. When Ellie gives birth to her son, Emen, it’s the signal for Ellie to venture out alone. Filmed over two years in Suaq, a pristine swamp forest in northern Sumatra, this feature-length documentary follows a cast of remarkable orangutans within a long-running research community. The film captures rare behaviours—including tool use—using groundbreaking drone footage, offering an intimate, unprecedented look at the lives of wild orangutans.
