Maria do Carmo is unexpectedly and threateningly compelled to appear immediately at the Services of the Logical Surveillance Center. Neither the summons nor the Services afterwards provide any enlightenment, leaving her to wait her turn, which is not yet known when. Even more so when she realizes that others, like her, have been there, after all, for years, without anyone understanding exactly why, much less anticipating when their problems will be solved.
