Second Innings: Finding the Stories We Often Overlook
Cinema, at its most meaningful, can illuminate emotions and experiences that often remain unseen. Second Innings, written and directed by Karthik Dammu, emerges from this belief. It is an intimate short film exploring loneliness, emotional isolation, family relationships, and the quiet struggles people carry within themselves daily.
The film follows Karan, an entrepreneur, his wife Mitali, and their twelve-year-old son, Aditya, who is autistic. Through this family, Second Innings invites audiences to reflect on care, connection, and understanding. Rather than offering easy conclusions, the film creates space for empathy and conversation around autism and mental well-being. At its heart, it asks us to recognise that even familiar lives can hold unspoken challenges.
Following Fouja, a film rooted in the world of the Indian Army, Second Innings marked a creative shift for me towards the intimate realities of contemporary life. I was drawn to a story where emotional truth, rather than spectacle, could carry the narrative. My intention was to create an understated, human experience that would stay with viewers beyond the closing frame.
Bringing the film to life was a collective effort. Every artist and crew member contributed to shaping its atmosphere and emotional honesty. Independent filmmaking demands patience, adaptability, and trust; this journey reinforced how essential collaboration is to translating a personal vision into a shared work. It also reminded me that sensitivity to a subject must extend beyond the script into performances, framing, sound, and the smallest details on screen.
I would also like to share that our media outreach for Second Innings has begun today, with an article about the film published in The Hans India. I am sharing the link with you below and will also be circulating it across my social media platforms to help extend the film’s visibility.
