“Loop Line” is an animation short film set in Mumbai, perhaps the first of its kind in the Marathi language. Animation in India is still restricted mostly to children’s content. Animation for mature viewing is extremely rare in India. "Loop Line was conceived as an Animation film while I was writing it. It is a completely independent, passion project. The film sets out to encapsulate the internal struggle of a middle-class Maharashtrian housewife and her poignant attempts to break the monotony of her life through flights of fancy, albeit fleeting.
“Loop Line” deals with one day in her life as she chooses fantasy to escape the dismissiveness and gaslighting that is typical of her life. Though the film is about this, particular housewife, the suppressed dreams of millions of other housewives, in similar situations, are reflected in hers. That is why I have chosen not to give her any name. Coming from a body of work in live action, directing an animated short has been enthralling.
I had a great team from Paperboat Design studios to bring to life the visual splendour of the animation. We worked with the talented Mitalee Jagtap Varadkar and Anand Alkunte for our pre-visualization, on which our animation was based. Anmol Bhave as the Sound Designer and Mangesh Dhakade as music director did an outstanding job with the audio components. The response to “Loop Line” in festivals all over the world has been very heartening and it has given me the impetus to make many more films in animation.
