Himahin Golok -The Sphere of Freedom directed by Dr Mainu Devi.
War and violence leave a deep imprint on the tender mind of an innocent child, but their impact becomes even more striking when viewed through the eyes of a child. Every sound of conflict unsettles him, but his young mind begins searching for a simple solution, something pure and hopeful. Drawing on this theme, the author narrates the story of a gentle hearted, sensitive and innocent child, who watched a live broadcast of a war on television while sitting beside his father. The horrifying scenes of destruction and the suffering of countless innocent people left a deep impression on him. When he asked his father what was happening, his father explained that a war was taking place. To help him understand, his father explains the concept of war using a globe, highlighting conflicts arising from territorial disputes, hatred, and the pursuit of power leading to the tragic loss of innocent lives. The next day at school, during the recreation period, the boy wandered near a group of senior students who were playing chess. One of them told him that chess represents a battle between the king, queen, and their soldiers. The following day, as he watched the game again, he saw one piece being captured. The act reminded him of the violence he had seen on television, and unable to bear the thought of killing, even in a game, he hurled the chessboard away.
Immediately afterward, he ran straight into the principal’s office. Seeing a globe on the principal’s table, one he remembered seeing before, he grabbed it without a second thought. Sitting quietly under a tree with the globe in his hands, he starts removing the borders drawn between nations, painted the entire globe green, imagining a peaceful world without boundaries.
To the child, erasing boundaries symbolizes erasing reasons for war, and he truly believes that peace would prevail if the Earth had no borders at all. The innocent child’s heart longs to soar freely, like a bird in the open sky. Thus, the film tried to capture the moments, showing how a child’s pure heart can dream of solutions that adults often overlook. Through this innocent gesture, the child offers a profound message: that unity, not separation, is the true path to peace.
