Beyond the Court: The Indian Wheelchair Basketball Journey

YWTC Trust pioneered wheelchair basketball training in Chennai, witnessing transformative benefits for persons with locomotor disabilities and shifting public perceptions toward inclusion. Recognizing its potential, we supported forming the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India to expand nationwide. As President for two terms, I introduced the sport across 24 states and Union Territories, experiencing firsthand the challenges of promoting wheelchair sports in a country where accessibility remains nascent—yet celebrating the profound positive changes in players’ lives.

Determined to amplify these stories and secure broader support, I spearheaded a documentary on wheelchair basketball. Backed by our CSR partner, we produced “Beyond the Court….” using talents from our filmmaking courses. I co-directed with Krishnasatyam, whose multifaceted expertise in cinematography, editing, and sound design proved invaluable.

We captured the electrifying Wheelchair Basketball National Championship, showcasing raw athleticism and resilience. True to our commitment, the film includes sign language interpretation and audio description for full accessibility, mirroring our previous productions.

At its heart are intimate profiles of two players—a female and a male—whose journeys reveal the sport’s challenges and triumphs. From overcoming societal barriers to gaining confidence and community, their stories humanize the struggle and celebrate empowerment.

This documentary is more than footage; it’s a call to action. We hope it ignites awareness about wheelchair basketball’s life-changing impact, highlights persistent accessibility gaps, and rallies support for players to excel internationally—bringing glory to India. By blending authentic narratives with professional production from disabled talent, “Beyond the Court….” challenges stereotypes and builds momentum for inclusive sports nationwide.
