At YWTC Trust, we believe the greatest barriers for persons with disabilities stem from lack of awareness. Visual media holds immense power to shift perceptions and drive inclusion. Inspired by this, we created “When Opportunity Knocks the Recruiter’s Door,” a short film rooted in the real struggles of my friend—a wheelchair user, IIT Madras graduate, and former MNC employee—who faced bias when seeking new opportunities.

With zero funding, I pitched the story to corporate friends. Sankara, Murali, Treasurer Vishal stepped up as actors, volunteer Aakash provided support, and I took the protagonist role. Securing an accessible office space proved challenging; a well- wisher offered a partially accessible venue, which our cast and crew adapted with teamwork to meet my needs.

Sharing the script on LinkedIn yielded a breakthrough: ad filmmaker Bhargava Rao volunteered his expertise. Together, we refined and rehearsed it, bringing the vision to life despite constraints.

Post-production tested our resolve—finding an accessible dubbing studio was Herculean, settling for a ground-floor space with steps we managed creatively. Committed to accessibility, we added sign language interpretation and later secured a US volunteer for audio description.

This journey revealed a stark truth: the film industry never envisioned persons with disabilities in creative roles. Dubbing studios and post-production facilities remain woefully inaccessible, underscoring systemic exclusion.

“Knocking” is more than a film—it’s a call to action. We resolved to train persons with disabilities in filmmaking, harnessing their talents to produce impactful stories. This grassroots effort aims to open eyes, challenging filmmakers to embrace true inclusion both onscreen and behind the camera.
