QUITTER LES LIEUX directed by
I've made all my films on Réunion Island ever since a man tried to kill me there, believing I was the devil because of my white skin. This made me realize the harm my country, France, had done there with colonization and slavery, and now I want to use my films to contribute to ensuring respect for the descendants of slaves.
I'm very well received on the island, and my work is shown and appreciated. It's more difficult in France because the French are mostly uninterested in these issues or take refuge in their guilt. But that will change, thanks to the younger generations.
I didn't have any particular problems with funding or during filming. The difficulties arose beforehand because the two main actors left the project a week before shooting. So I wrote another script, and after that, everything went very well with the new actors and the highly motivated crew. I had to constantly invent, which I love, and my team supported me.
This film is for anyone curious to discover other cultures and ways of life.
Let's respect our differences; they are the richness of our planet, and that's also how the world will become a better place.
I've shot five films on Réunion Island, including three feature-length fiction films. I have other projects planned there.
My next film will take place in all the countries of the Indian Ocean. Through fiction, it will tell the story of the Comoros Archipelago and its relationships with the other countries of the Indian Ocean. It's an action film with strong characters who will escape poverty by appropriating European colonial exploitation for their own benefit. It will be a film about a victory for a country in the Global South!
