Bra directed by MUNEK BATTULA
It’s been almost a month since we released our comedy short film Bra on YouTube, and yet it still turns heads whenever its title is mentioned in public. The concept of the film came from everyday observations and the discovery of a major stigma surrounding a small piece of women’s clothing. It was a stigma that needed to be brought to attention — and what better way to do that than comically?
The process of making this film was filled with challenges at every step. Casting for the female roles was met with a lot of resistance solely because of the subject matter, and was only finalized a few days before the shoot. The writing team revised the script the night before filming to ensure the scenes flowed effortlessly. The direction team stretched their networking abilities to secure locations, while the cinematography team was constantly racing against daylight — and it didn’t stop there.
Another challenge fell upon the music composer, who had to create one of the most complex pieces of jazz music ever composed for a film of this scale. With countless time signatures and tempo changes, it was a task that pushed both the composer and the session musicians assigned to perform it.
It took nothing short of a colossal effort from everyone just to make a film that anyone could enjoy. Our film might not directly preach about the social stigma, nor does it offer a solution, but we can all still pat ourselves on the back. Because when someone laughs out loud while watching our film and hesitates to mention the title in public, we know for a fact that we got them thinking.
